Culture Keeper Bio

Sophia Tupuola is a first-generation Sāmoan-American visual artist born and raised in Bayview Hunters Point public housing on the unceded land of the Ramaytush Ohlone (San Francisco). Her liberation work for Black and Brown communities is rooted in lived experience, shaped by systemic inequities and the premature death of loved ones. Through grassroots organizing and public art, Sophia creates spaces for healing, resistance, and cultural expression. Her collaborative installations can be seen at MidWay Village in Daly City and Sunnydale Hub in San Francisco. A proud mama, warrior, and world-maker, Sophia’s story of giving birth during the pandemic was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle article, “Reclaiming Her Space: Birthing through a Pandemic.” Her work continues to shift power and uplift community through visual storytelling and radical love.
